Alcoholics Anonymous

Thames Valley Intergroup Medical Liaison,

e-mail: AA Berkshire

Dear Doctor,

Alcoholics Anonymous as a resource for the medical profession

There are many hundreds of alcoholics in Berkshire who have recovered from alcoholism and who regard their first attendance at an AA meeting as a turning point in their lives. We remain forever grateful to whoever told us about AA and often it was our GP who was the first to do so.

Because doctors play such an important role in the recovery of so many alcoholics, we would like you to get to know us better and see for yourself the ‘success stories’ that fill the meetings of AA in Berkshire as a result of effective intervention.

Please read our leaflet titled ‘AA as a resource for the medical profession’ It will tell you much more than this brief letter.

Attend an ‘open’ regular AA meeting

We are always happy to welcome visitors to our ‘open’ meetings who are interested to know more about AA. Please check our meetings list. Details of when each meeting is 'open' is given on the details page. You are welcome just to turn up unannounced but if you would like your visit to be accompanied, please call 0118 - 95 97 494.

Contact poster

Finally, you may feel you are already able to advocate AA attendance – and so we would like to send you a poster to display on your Notice Board. Your silent endorsement may encourage your patients to contact us if they are worried about their drinking. Please e-mail your address.

If you already encourage problem drinkers to go to AA you will know what a difference it can make to someone who wants to get well. But if AA is a mystery to you we hope this letter will be the first step towards changing that. We hope that you will find the leaflet informative, that you accept at least one of our invitations to meet us, and that you will find space on your Notice Board for our Contact poster.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and if there is anything at all you would like to discuss about Alcoholics Anonymous generally or specifically in Berkshire, please don’t hesitate to contact us – by phone or e-mail

P.S. We will be delighted to make a presentation to your surgery staff if you would prefer us to visit you.
